Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) is a major metropolitan city in New Zealand’s North Island. Auckland, the country’s most populous city, has a population of around 1,470,100 people (June 2020).
It is part of the Auckland Region, which includes outlying rural areas and the Hauraki Gulf islands and has a population of 1,717,500 people. Although Europeans continue to make up the majority of Auckland’s population, the city has been more multicultural and cosmopolitan in recent years, with Asians accounting for 31% of the city’s population in 2018. In addition, Auckland is home to the world’s largest Polynesian population.
The Mori name for Auckland is Tamaki Makaurau, which means “many people like Tamaki,” referring to the city’s natural wealth and geography.

Auckland Museum Parnell
The Auckland Museum is widely considered as one of the best museums in the Southern Hemisphere, with a rare array of Maori and Pacific artefacts.
The Museum tells the tale of New Zealand as a country, from award-winning natural history exhibitions to the Museum’s Maori treasures gallery, which houses over 2,000 priceless Mori artefacts, including unique carvings, whole homes, and the last great Maori war canoe crafted from a giant Totara tree.

Sky Tower Auckland

The Wynyard Quarter is a restored plot of land on the Waitemata Harbour, on the western outskirts of Auckland’s coastline. It’s north of Freemans Bay and west of the Viaduct Basin.
Some come to eat at harbourside restaurants or sip drinks as the sun falls. Some parents are bringing their children to the funky maritime inspired play area. This fantastic inner-city playground features a cool sand floor, a basketball court, and salvaged materials that have been given a new twist. Drive the vintage tram, keep an eye out for the public piano, and pick up a book from the tiny library housed in a colourful shipping crate.
